Pantheistic Roots

The Secret, a new (2006) self-help video (and subsequent book) by Rhonda Byrne, is sweeping the nation. It's popularity knows no limitations. For the first time that I'm aware of in my lifetime, the same philosophy is being embraced on a wide scale by every age group (including children), men and women, intellectuals and non-intellectuals, religiously-oriented and business-oriented.

The Secret is an old philosophy that has been re-packaged to suit our modern culture and is being agressively marketed, enjoying celebrity endorsements at the highest levels.1

The "secret" to which the title refers is the idea posited in the film (and book) that there exists a "law" (akin to a law of physics) whereby our thoughts and emotions can manipulate energy throughout the universe to attract events into our lives. They call this "the law of attraction." It is compared to the law of gravity and other natural laws. In the film Bob Procter states, "Everything that's coming into your life you are attracting into your life. And it's attracted to you by virtue of the images you're holding in your mind. It's what you're thinking. You see, whatever is going on in your mind, you are attracting to you."

Quotes from The Secret

The following quotes are excerpted from the book:

"As above, so below. As within, so without."

"We have received thousands of accounts of The Secret being used to bring about large sums of money and unexpected checks in the mail. People have used The Secret to manifest their perfect homes, life partners, cars, jobs and promotions, with many accounts of businesses being transformed within days of applying The Secret. There have been heartwarming stories of stressed relationships involving children being restored to harmony.

Some of the most magnificent stories we've received have come from children using The Secret to attract what they want including high grades and friends."

"The secret has been used to attract all manner of things, from a specific feather, to ten million dollars."

"There isn't a single thing that you cannot do with this knowledge. It doesn't matter who you are or where you are, the secret can give you whatever you want."

1Oprah Winfrey is perhaps the biggesat promoter of The Secret. She has had its author, Rhonda Byrne, on her show several times and is responsible for boosting the book's sales exponentially.
